Thursday -today we moved onto Kakadu, on the way we stopped of at the Mamukala wetlands, an observation platform allows you to view the birdlife and a mural illustrates the seasonal changes that occur throughout the year.
We decided to register ($25 each) at the visitors centre and the find a campsite as I was concerned that they maybe full due to it still being NT school holidays, no such worry.
We set up at the Malabanjbanjdju campground for $10 a night, no facilities but at $10 who cares when there are only 2 other campers and you wake up to the sound of birds, beautiful sunrises, local wildlife and a campfire at night beats the city and work.
It was then off to the East Alligator region and Ubirr to look at the Aboriginal rock art. It is a 1 km circular track that takes you past some of the best examples of rock art I have seen, that includes what we saw on our last trip to the centre in 2008. This area is in the shadow of the magnificent Arnhem Land escarpment , and has rainforest, stone country, rock art, extensive flood plains and the East Alligator river. Cahill's Crossing is just down the road, this is where you cross into Arnhem Land (if you have a permit or on an organised tour).
The view from the lookout really shows what the surrounding area is like.
