Purnululu National Park -Bungle Bungle Southern walks
Tuesday - Purnululu National Park is World Heritage listed and covers 239,723 hectares which includes the Bungle Bungle Ranges that cover 76,602 hectares. Today we decided to do some of the shorter walks in the southern section of the Bungles, you drive to the Piccaninny parking area where all the walks start, we decided to do The Domes, Catheral Gorge and Piccaninny Creek lookout. The Domes walk takes you through the banded Domes which are a feature of the Bungle Bungles. Catheral Gorge is on everyone's list to do, you walk through the banded domes, pebbles and potholes, towering cliffs and honeycomb rocks that lead to a natural amphitheatre. We then continued onto the Piccaninny Creek lookout which provides views across Piccaninny creek as it winds south through spinifex hummocks towards the Ord river, there are 13 different types of spinifex in the park and this with the unique domes where two of the reasons for being listed on the World Heritage list. We then returned to the car park and headed off to the airstrip to check out the flights over the Bungles.
